How much love do you have for your business?

Having a passion for your business is not the same thing as loving every detail of your business. Don't mistake your reason for doing what you do with the daily details of getting it done.
Let me ask you a question, do you love, and I mean, really love what you're doing?
There is an adage that has been going around for several years. It's says something to the effect that you need to have a passion for what you do, and you need to follow that passion.
The implication here is if you're doing something that you're not passionate about, you should quit doing that and find whatever your passion is. My problem with that adage is that it's not telling the whole truth.
Recently I've been talking to some of my younger entrepreneurial friends, and they've been asking me to share some things that relate specifically to their particular generation. Although I do not believe this topic is unique to their age, I do think that the younger generation probably needs to hear this more than the other generation.
I'm going to be completely honest with you; I don't love my business all the time. Now that doesn't mean I don't have a passion for my business, what it simply means is that about 80 percent of the time, I'm dealing with drudgery.
I'm dealing with the grind.
I'm dealing with paperwork.
I'm doing things that are necessary but not necessarily something that fires my passion.
I am passionate about our franchise owners and about helping them achieve the American dream.
I am passionate about what we're doing with our customers, how we're building relationships, and how we treat our customers.
The day to day grind, some of the things that I have to get done daily aren't the things that thrill me. I don't love those kinds of situations, and unfortunately, what we see happening in the media too often is that they will promote these great successes. They'll report these great successes, and how everything is wonderful and everything is going so well, and shouldn't we all ascribe to that whole idea that we would somehow be like those guys.
What they're not telling you is that there were ten years of difficulty. There were ten years of struggle. There was ten years strife to get to that particular point.
We struggled in our business for 10 years. For 15 years, we've been doing this, and suddenly people look at us and say you guys are doing so great. Yes, we are a 15-year-old, overnight success. The bottom line is there's a lot of work that goes into building something of significance.
I've believed all my life, and I've heard it all my life, that nothing of value comes easy. You have to work for it, and I think there's a certain amount of truth to that. There's the idea that somehow when we work when we put effort into something, it has a higher value.
And unfortunately, what I see happening today is a lot of people looking at their business or what they're doing or some idea that they might have had, and they're pursuing something and then when it gets hard, they just quit.
One of my mentors told me one time; they said you know most people give up before the good stuff. I think that's true. I think we work, and we accomplish, and we're almost there, and because it's hard, we go, "oh, I'm going give up."
I think if there's one lesson that all of us, including the younger generation, need to hear is, just because it's hard doesn't make it wrong. We need to work at things. We need to put in the effort. The more effort you put into it, the more you give your commitment to something, the higher the reward on the other end.
Ask any great success, and they will tell you there was a lot of effort put into it. I am so glad that Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Jeff Bezos, as well as other people, have been willing to put the effort and the time and the struggle into their businesses.
Because of their efforts, we have wonderful things around us. All of the advances that we're so excited about these days are the result of their efforts.
Look at your business or where your passion lies. At some point you're going to have to make a decision; Are you willing to put in the price or the time in, and pay the price to achieve whatever it is that you feel like is a great goal.
